As someone who tries to buy as much organic where I can, I thought it might be worth exploring some new ideas on buying organic as part of the Soil Association's Organic September - which runs until the end of this month.
Organic September: 5 thoughtful ideas
Check out the 'Dirty Dozen'
Even if you're not able to buy everything organic, then I found
this study conducted in the US on an annual basis, great for informing your organic choices.
For example produce like Strawberries, Apples, Spinach, Tomatoes and cucumbers have been shown to hold the most pesticidal residue and therefore a good reason to buy organic. You can view the complete list of the dirtiest and the cleanest at
Mind Body Green.
Try organic and biodynamic wines
A few years ago to celebrate the birth of my youngest son I was given a bottle of organic sparkling wine from Sedlescombe vineyard - it was delicious although definitely for a special occasion. You can find out more about them at
English Organic Wine - where you can also shop online and read about their very informative vineyard tours. Alternatively most supermarkets offer a selection of organic wine too and
Vintage Roots is a specialist organic and biodynamic wine delivery business - so you can even have it delivered direct to your door.
Sign up for a veg box
If you’re not on too much of a budget then you could sign up to an organic veg box if you don’t already. There are now lots of smaller, local options delivering seasonal produce direct – simply
click here to see who’s delivering in your area - or alternatively
Abel and Cole and
Riverford deliver nationwide.
Switch to organic cotton
Of course, we know quite a lot about this as we only use GOTS certified organic cotton here at Braintree. Before it’s even planted, the seeds of non-organic cotton are usually treated with genetically modified pesticides and chemicals whereas organic cotton seeds, are not. This means that right from the beginning, the seeds can grow naturally and we are not polluting water sources and affecting wildlife with synthetic fertilisers and pesticides. Download the Think Dirty App
Although not totally about organic, the
Think Dirty App is a great app all about beauty and personal care products. Simply download and then go through the contents of your washbag or your bathroom shelf and either scan the barcode or search for the product. You’ll then see a simple guide to how clean your beauty products actually are – or claim to be. The app was developed Lily Tse and born out of a personal journey to understand the truths behind the beauty industry and to help make more informed choices. There are now over 350,000 products listed - I found my facewash and moisturiser within seconds.
Happy Organic September all!
